Driving directions from the south (Vienna or Brno)

You will arrive in Prague on highway D1. Keep looking for the signs to Plzen or Smichov. It will take you to main road around the Prague Center. When crossing the big concrete bridge over the Vltava river move into the left hand lane marked to Smichov. That road goes along the river bank, so just continue driving to the center (few kilometers). You will see a couple bridges on the right hand side, but don’t cross the river. Follow the embankment (Janackovo Nabrezi Street) all the way until the road Ts at another bridge. Turn left, across more tram tracks onto Vitezna Street and follow the road three blocks until it Ts again. Turn right on Karmelitska Street with trolley track in the center lane. Continue along through three lights. The first left after the third light is where you turn on Trziste Street. There is a little clock on a traffic island there as a landmark.( If you get into Malostranske Namesti, you’ve gone too far and you have to go around the church and come back onto Karmelitska Street and then go right on Trziste Street.) Half way up Trziste street the police will stop you and they may ask to see your passport and perhaps look under the hood to make sure you’re not packing explosives. This is a standard security procedure to drive near the Embassy. Look for the American flag on the Embassy building on the left. For reference, you will also see the Alchymist building at the top of the hill with four flags above the door. Park your car there for couple minutes to get your apartment keys and than move your car to parking according to further instruction.

Driving directions from the west (Pilsen, Nurnburg, Munich)

You will arrive in Prague from Germany on the highway D5. As you cruise down the highway, you will pass an Ikea store on the right side; this generally means you are now in Prague. The highway will continue another three-four kms and then abruptly end, going off and around and up to the right. At the top of that turn, go right and you’ll be heading up a hill and directly in front of you will be a Philips building. Pass through the light there and head down the hill. Get into the right hand lane and at the Ford Dealer, exit off to the right and you’ll be at the bottom of the hill. Turn right and you’ll be on Plzenska Street. There should be tram tracks in the middle of the street and it will be two lanes going into town. So, you drive all the way down Plzenska, about 5 kms, following the signs for Centrum. You will end in a T at river bank (Vltavska Street). Turn left and continue driving on the river bank (Janackovo Nabrezi Street) all the way until the road Ts at another bridge. Turn left, across more tram tracks onto Vitezna Street and follow the road three blocks until it Ts again. Turn right on Karmelitska Street with trolley track in the center lane. Continue along through three lights. The first left after the third light is where you turn on Trziste Street. There is a little clock on a traffic island there as a landmark. (If you get into Malostranske Namesti, you’ve gone too far and you have to go around the church and come back onto Karmelitska Street and then go right on Trziste Street.) Driving directions from the north (Berlin, Dresden)

You will arrive in Prague on Liberecka Street via the highway D8. Follow this highway all the way into town down a long hill and across the river via Barikadniku Bridge. Keep on the main road (Argentinska Street) until it forks around a gas station. You must take the right fork and then bear right along the river. Keep in the middle lane and continue up the hill straight along the river embankment (Nabrezi kpt. Jarose and Nabrezi E. Benese), past two bridges. Eventually the street will T. At that T you will need to go right and then immediately left onto Valdstejnska Street. Follow this street until you come to a T at a light. You have reached Malostranske square with St. Nicholas church (green cupola roof). You must go right at the light and go up the hill. You pass a parking lot and then a church wall and then you should go to the left. Most traffic will go this way, and then you’ll pass the church and go left again down the hill (U Glaubicu Pub on your right side). Take the next right, which is Karmelitska Street and after about 20 meters, right again onto Trziste Street. There is a little clock on a traffic island as a landmark. Half way up Trziste street the police will stop you and they may ask to see your passport and perhaps look under the hood to make sure you’re not packing explosives. This is a standard security procedure to drive near the Embassy. Look for the American flag on the Embassy building on the left.
